Yogi, a male practitioner of yoga. Also "yogin."

Yoga is the work of bringing the mind to stillness, effecting "chitta-vritti-nirodha," or cessation of the fluctuations of the mind (samadhi). YOGA-SUTRAS 1:2

According to the Yoga-Sutras, the three activities of yoga are:

1) austerities,
2) study of scripture and the inner divine Self, and
3) devotion to the Lord of the Universe.

YOGA-SUTRAS VERSE 1:2

A yogi is anyone who engages in the three practices above. Female forms of the word include yogini and yogess.

According to Krsna in the Bhagavad-Gita, yogic practice consists of meditating alone in a quiet place. He sits in a comfortable position (asana) with head and spine erect and engages the work of stilling the mind, to encounter the Divinity directly within. This is yoga.

“Greater is the Yogi than body disciplining ascetics,
greater even than the followers of wisdom’s path.
Greater than the path of action. Be thou Arjuna a Yogi!”

Krisna, Bhagavad Gita 6:48
